The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) is an institutional
grant designed to help students from low-income households by covering the costs
of tuition and fees. The grant does not cover the cost of your textbook. TPEG
funds do not have to be repaid.
TPEG grant monies are available to students wanting to take Computer Job Skills,
the GED Prep course, and the course to train for Certified Nurse Aide. To find
out more about these courses, please see information below or call 281.459.7119.
Here are the steps needed to apply for grant funding:
1. Fill out the Continuing Education Registration Form
2. Fill out the Continuing Education TPEG Application
3. Fill out the FAFSA Application – This is done online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If
you need assistance or do not have access to the Internet, a computer as well as
personnel to help you is in the Financial Aid offices. They are located in the
Administration Building in Room B1104 and can be reached by phone at
281.458.4050 ext. 2321.
*Important – When applying for the FAFSA, be sure to tell the Financial Aid
office that you are applying for TPEG funds for a Continuing Education class AND
be sure to include the school code given to you by the Financial Aid office.
4. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing.
5. If you qualify, you will receive an award letter in the mail. Upon receipt of
this letter, bring it to the Continuing Education offices, and we will enroll
you in the appropriate class.
6. If you do not qualify, please contact Martha Sells at 281.459.7662. We will
put you on a waiting list to apply for possible future funding from alternate
sources.
Computer Job Skills
Computer Job Skills is a 128 hour course designed to prepare students for entry
level clerical and administrative assistant positions. Classes are held 4 days
per week, 4 hours per day, and are offered in the morning as well as evening
hours. Students receive instruction in keyboarding, computer operating systems
(MS Windows), word processing (MS Word), and spreadsheets (MS Excel). In
addition, an overview of the Internet and PowerPoint is presented.
Along with these computer skills, life skills necessary to obtain employment are
introduced - such as building a winning resume, job interview techniques, and
dressing for success. A tour of our job placement office is given to the class,
and there they are able and encouraged to visit and seek job opportunities.
GED Preparation
To be eligible to enroll for the GED Prep course & exam, the student must be a
resident of Texas or a member of the US armed forces stationed at a Texas
installation and meet one of the following conditions:
- 18 years old,
- 17 years old with parental/guardian consent,
- 17 years old who is married, in military service, been
declared an adult by the court or legally severed child/parent relationship,
- 17 years old enrolled in a High School Equivalency
program,
- Any applicant who is at least 16 years old is eligible
for the test if recommended by a public agency having supervision or custody
under court order. (Recommendations must include the applicant's name and
date of birth, and must be signed by an official of the public agency having
supervision or custody of the person under a court order.),
- A 16 year old may take the GED Preparation course, but
testing eligibility does not begin until age 17.

Certified Nurse Aide
Preparation for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge,
skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long0term
care facilities. Topics include resident's rights, communication, safety,
observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and
safety. Emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for the provision of basic nursing
care. Other topics include basic nursing skills, principles of long term care,
infection control, basic physical & psychological needs as related to aging &
restorative service. Includes 76 hours of Texas Department of Health approved
curriculum with required testing hours.
